Warrington Swimming and Water Polo Club players success at ESSA Junior Championships

Players from Warrington SWPC who attend Great Sankey High School in years 7 & 8 have won the first round of the Northern heat of the English Schools Swimming Association (ESSA) Cadet Water Polo Championships.

Emily Ireland, Leo Kilpatrick, Louis Stowell, Joseph Weston and Marcus Woods along with two other pupils from Great Sankey joined school teams from across the North West at Manchester Aquatics Centre on Tuesday 17th May to compete for a place in the next round of the Northern Tournament.

After winning their first two group matches 6-0 and 5-0, Great Sankey went through to beat Beech House School in the semi-finals 12-0, securing their place in the final against St Edwards College Liverpool.

In the final Great Sankey were on the attack from the start, but their first attempt on goal went over the crossbar and St Edwards Keeper caught the 2nd and 3rd attempts. It was St Edwards who scored the first goal of the match but Great Sankey drew level shortly afterwards, and resumed their attack. Strong goalkeeping from St Edwards fended off several more shots, but Great Sankey pulled ahead with a second goal, then another soon after. A shot from St Edwards in the last minute went wide of the goal, and the match ended 3-1 to Great Sankey.

The Team go through to the next round of the Championship which is yet to be announced.
