Swim England aiming to double number of registered water polo players in five years

Ian Pass.jpg

Swim England is aiming to double the number of registered water polo players in the next five years as part of its new strategy to develop the sport.

On 29 Apr 2020, he National Governing Body’s Water Polo Leadership Group published the comprehensive Swim England Water Polo Strategy 2020-2025, which details a number of targets to help the sport grow. It has been developed following months of consultations with players, officials, volunteers and sports administrators.

The strategy is the vision of the Swim England Water Polo Leadership Group chairman Toby King, who is keen to boost the profile of the sport.

A total of 6,900 water polo players were registered with Swim England in 2019 but the goal is to see that number increase to 14,000 by 2025.

The document details plans to enhance participation and training at every level of the sport.

Swim England’s competition structure will be reviewed and there will be a drive to recruit more technical officials at all levels of the game.

The strategy also includes a real impetus on coaching, with a regular coaches’ forum and opportunities to share training techniques.

Strategy to be proud of

And there will be better communication with the water polo community, which will include reports on how well performance targets are being met.

Toby said: “Despite the current challenging circumstances, I am delighted to be publishing our five-year vision for water polo. We believe we can double the number of registered players in the next few years, which should help us boost the profile of the sport. This will lead to more and better competitions, coaches and officials, as well as helping us compete on the global stage and attracting more funding.”
Please ensure the strategy is circulated as widely as possible.

Online Child Safeguarding, Teaching and Coaching Qualifications

One of the effects of the Covid-19 virus is that courses have been developed that can now be done online so that the complete course or non practical elements of teaching and coaching courses can be completed prior to pools being reopened. For teaching and coaching qualifications, dates will be organised in the future to complete these practical elements.

Keeping Fit

Keeping Fit

Whilst the pools are closed, it is good to keep fit and active. There are lots of online activities
on YouTube and other social media with ideas on how to exercise at home.  Exercises that use the same muscles and similar movements to those when swimming will help you keep in good shape for
when you can return to the pool. Here are some ideas from Swim England

Creating your own bespoke home training programme

If you play water polo, you can practice ball handling skills (I suggest in the garden), without
the complication of staying afloat as well! Here are some tips for water polo
players

Great Britain goalkeeper Elliot McHugh’s top drills for staying active out the pool

If you find something that is fun, then as a challenge try to do it a bit faster, or for
slightly longer each day. Be sure to do this safely, with a warm up and stretch
and cool down exercise at the end.

If any of you find any good videos or home challenges, let us know and we will share them with the
other club members.

Warrington players achieve Gold at Inter-regional Championships

Congratulations to Warrington players Christopher Jones, Fintan Lynch and Jack Moss on winning Gold Medals at the U14 Boys Inter-regional Water Polo championships in Walsall.

Playing for North West Tigers the boys took on teams in the group stages from Ireland, East Midlands and East, clocking up a goal difference of 27. They faced group stage winners West Midlands and London in the play-offs and finished the tournament unbeaten to claim Gold.

Warrington 07 player Alex Rix, also competing, gained valuable experience playing for North West Ravens, a mostly younger squad entered to prep players for future age group championships.

Pictured are all 4 Boys on Day 1 ready to compete, NW Tigers squad celebrating with the traditional dive in from Coaches and Team Manager (Phil Jones) and the Gold Winners team photo.

Well done everyone.
