Under-16s in double-header against Tyldesley

Warrington vs. Tyldesley 16&U (M&D/B&D)

The first under-16 match in the new home venue, Orford Park, is a double-header against Tyldesley.

1st Quarter

The match starts with Warrington attacking the shallow end.  Matt wins the swim off and Dom is first on the score-sheet.  Warrington defend - good pressure from Katie - Tyldesley make a high shot from the wing, Luke saves.  Matt takes a shot, it goes wide.  Conor picks up the ball and swims up - he’s under pressure - he shoots and scores.  Conor passes into Dom’s path, he collects the ball, shoots and scores.  Katie passes up the wing to Emily, who scores.  Now it’s Emily passing to Katie, who passes into Dom who scores.  Tyldesley tighten their defence, and Dom is under pressure in the pit - he shoots and it goes in, but he’s penalised for a shove and no goal is given.  Next attack, and Dom is free, Ben passes to him and he scores.  It’s Ben’s turn next and he’s on the attack, under pressure, he scores.  Brett receives the ball, but there’s no clear shot. Warrington get a man-up following a foul on Brett, Ben capitalises with a goal.   Dan receives the ball from Ben, but no clear shot and he sends the ball back to Ben who scores.  Tyldesley have the last throw of the quarter.  The home side have started strongly; the score is 10 - 0.

 2nd Quarter

Brett wins the swim-off for Warrington.  The ref takes time to clarify a decision and Tyldesley gain a man-up.  The home-side defend well - good pressure from Emma.  On the counter-attack Dan scores.  The team continue to defend well as the visitors increase their attack.  Katie is pulled back, Luke makes a save.  Brett scores.  Emma working hard in defence; Tyldesley get a man-up and Luke saves a shot on goal.  Matt and Katie are both tenacious in defence; the visitors get a man up and their coach calls a time-out.  Tyldesley set-up and the home-side defend superbly, Matt finally claiming the ball.  Emily goes on to score from a super lob-shot.  Tyldesley counter-attack and Warrington defend as a team, keeping the visitors out until the buzzer.  Warrington on the attack, Emily passes to Matt, in the pit, who scores.  The quarter ends 15 - 0.

3rd Quarter

Brett dons the red hat for this quarter and Luke plays out-field.  The ref delays the re-start and the home-side “warm-up” the fresh goal-keeper.  Play starts with a pass from Luke into Dan, who is squeezed off the ball.  Emma works hard in defence and is straight up to the other end to help the attack.  Conor makes a superb pass to Dan, who scores.  Conor scores himself, following a flick of the ball with his foot - good goal.  Brett makes a save.  Luke passes to Ben, Ben passes to Dom, who scores.  Emily covers, but Tyldesley find the back of the net.  Luke shoots, but it goes over the goal.  There is good pressure by Dan, Ben picks up the ball and swims up.  Conor finishes the attack with a bounce-shot.  Tyldesley on the attack and set-up well, they shoot and the ball goes in just past Brett’s finger-tips.  Luke shoots, it’s just wide.  The quarter ends 20 - 2.

4th Quarter

Luke gets the red hat back.  Dom shoots from the pit, but the Tyldesley goal-keeper makes a cracking save.  Ben goes on to score, quickly followed by Conor.  Emma keeps pressure on in defence.  Katie makes a shot, but it’s saved.  Emma defends the pit; Conor makes a bounce-shot and scores.  The team defend well and the Tyldesley attack runs out of time.  Ben scores.  Emma defends well, and as Warrington attack Dom is pulled back and the home-side get a man-up.  Ben scores.  Emma passes to Dan, who passes to Emily, who scores.  Great team play from the home-side.  The match is in the last minute and Luke throws long to Dan, who scores.  Emily shoots in the last second and scores.  The match ends 28 - 2.

Whilst the home-side attacked well, it was their superb defending that led to the final score.  The whole team defended; with some players working hard throughout - Emma worthy of special mention.  A final bit of tension was the un-knotting and subsequent missing hats; Andrea and Kevin saved the day!

Senior Men Antwerp Tournament 2016

The men’s team travelled to Antwerp for an international tournament hosted in an amazing out door pool on the banks of the river in Antwerp. Travel on Friday was extremely smooth and the chaps got their tents set up and headed to the beer tent to meet the teams and sample the local refreshment.

Saturday saw the first match at a very civilised start time of 12.30. Warrington faced a French team, Calypso and despite a valiant effort and a cameo 1 minute appearance from the worse for wear Ian Musgrove the team lost 10-6.

The second game was a much better result and Warrington came out 5-7 winners against De Mechelen 2. The 3rd game was another good performance and the team were growing into the tournament this time coming out 6-7 winners against De Zuidwesthoek in a close game. The final match of the day at 5pm saw Warrington cruise to victory 2-9 against Waregem B. It was clear performance improved as the effects from the previous night subsided.

This put Warrington joint top of our group on 9 points with two other teams. The tournament rules stipulated in a such a case positions should be decided by results between the teams but this also left them equal, having all beaten each other. The standings were then decided on goal difference in the games between the equal teams. Despite Warrington having the best overall goal difference we came third in this case, therefore we would play off for 5-6th the next day. This was tough as we could easily have been playing for 1st-2nd.

Never the less the team did not lose heart and dived into the sumptuous and plentiful barbecue, continuing into the night with the beers and disco Bryn and Ben being the stalwarts of the team until the bitter end.

The next day Warrington arose to play their final game in probably their worst performance of the weekend. Warrington lost 11-6 to Gentse and finished 6th overall.

All in all a fantastic weekend helped by the gorgeous weather and Warrington hope to return next year 2nd-4th September 2017!

Under-16s continue to impress!

2nd Quarter

Warrington are immediately attacking and Ben scores in the first thirty seconds of the quarter.  The visitors defend well and Luke makes a save.  Bridgefield get a man-up, they set-up well and take a shot, and the ball creeps over the line - just.  Emily swims up, calmly takes long-shot and scores a great goal in the bottom left – superb play!  Luke makes a diving save in the shallow end, sends the ball up the pool and Brett scores.  Bridgefield have possession, but Matt intercepts, gets the ball to Ben who makes a great pass to Emma on the wing, she shoots, but it’s saved.  Warrington defend a man-up and the ball is soon up to the other end.  Emily passes to Ben and he scores – fantastic team-work and a fantastic finish!  Bridgefield call a time-out and Warrington defend the man-up.  Quickly attacking again and Dom hits the post, Katie collects the ball from a Bridgefield pass, sends it to Emily, who scores.  The quarter ends 2 – 9.

3rd Quarter

Warrington have a comfortable lead, but Bridgefield aren’t beaten yet, and score from a man-up.  Dom scores with one of his trade-mark shots from long-range; he scores again.  Katie really keeping the pressure on the opposition with some fantastic defending.  Bridgefield make a long throw and it bounces off Brett’s head; quick-thinking from Warrington, and the visitors attack again, Katie shoots but it’s saved.  Luke throws long to Brett, who passes to Ben, fantastic play.  Warrington have a man-up, Matt shoots but it hits the post.  Luke makes a terrific save.  Katie scores, shortly followed by Emily, with a long shot – was it 15 metres?    Another strong quarter, the score is 3 - 12.

4th Quarter

Coach Sue makes some changes going into the final quarter and its Conor to score.  Next up Dom shoots, but it is saved.  A quick one-two between Ben and Emily, and Ben scores.  Dan passes to Conor, who scores.  Bridgefield are on the attack, they shoot, but Luke makes the save. Katie scores from a Warrington man-up, and it’s the last minute of the game.  Warrington keep the pressure on as Dom scores again.  The match ends 3 – 18.

The young Bridgefield team showed commitment and determination, but were overwhelmed by the secure performance from a strong Warrington team.  One Warrington spectator said it was “an exceptional team performance!”

16&UNDER NORTHERN LEAGUE

Northern League 16&u (mixed)  16th July 2016

Maltby Leisure Centre, Rotherham

Warrington’s under-16s made the journey across the Pennines knowing they had some tough water polo matches ahead of them.  The other teams in the tournament were some of the strongest in the country - Sedgefield, Sheffield and Rotherham.  Warrington were to play three matches, each consisting of four 5-minute quarters - the team were up for the challenge, guided by Coach Su.

1st Match - Warrington vs Sedgefield

Warrington started strongly as Dom put the team ahead with two goals.  Sedgefield increased the pressure and took the lead.  Dom scored a penalty at the end of the first quarter.  Warrington played well; Conor scored - the opposition were kept at bay and didn’t score all second quarter.  Dom scored again to even things up, meanwhile Luke made some terrific saves and the team defended strongly.  In the final quarter the Warrington players were superb - they could not have given anymore.  Conor scored, to put Warrington ahead, spectators began to think a Warrington victory was possible, but it wasn’t to be, as Sedgefield got a goal making the final score 9 - 9.  Warrington gave absolutely everything to gain a draw against a fantastic side and earning a point in the league.

2nd Match - Sheffield vs Warrington

With no time to recover from their first, Warrington faced another top-team in their second match.  Sheffield were rested and looking for a second win of the tournament - this was going to be tough.  After a change of hats and a quick drink, the Warrington players were back in the water.  Sheffield were the stronger side for the first two quarters, nevertheless Luke pulled off a couple of superb saves and the team were keeping Sheffield at bay with the score at half-time 3 - 0.  Warrington got a second wind in the third quarter, with a goal each from Matt and Conor.  Warrington fought to stay in the game in the final quarter, with a goal from Emily B and a ridiculous red-card for Ben in the final moments of the game.  Determination and team-spirit was shown by all the Warrington players, but Sheffield were the winners, with the final score 7 - 3.

3rd Match Rotherham vs Warrington

Warrington had a much-needed rest to re-fuel before their final match of the tournament.  Su briefed the team and spirits were high as they hoped for a win to end the day.  The teams were evenly matched during the first quarter, but Rotherham just edged ahead.  Dom scored in reply and Luke made a great save.  In the second quarter some of the Ref’s decisions were unfavourable and the opposition gained a Penalty, which increased their lead to 3 - 1, at half-time.  The third quarter was exciting with both sides showing how much they wanted to win - Warrington’s scorers were Matt and Dom.  Rotherham gained another penalty, which hit the post, although was gathered in and converted after the re-bound.  The score was very close going into the final quarter - 6 - 5, to the home side.  The last five minutes of the match were nail-biting and Warrington were battling throughout the eventful quarter.  The Rotherham keeper was sent out; Dom and Dan scored for Warrington and the visiting supporters were very tense!  The Warrington side kept trying right to the end; the final score was Rotherham 8 Warrington 7.

The players were shattered but should be proud of how they played against very strong opponents and the final placing didn’t reflect the quality of the water polo from the Warrington players, many of whom were well below the age of those in the other teams.

Women's Team come Third in Livepool and District Championships

Warrington started off well, but narrowly lost their first game 1-2 against Birkenhead, with Hazel Musgrove making some great saves in goal. With no substitutes and everyone contributing to a good team performance, with some great defensive work, against the team that eventually came second..

In the second match against Lancaster Emilty Atkinson went in goal, which allowed us to have more attacking options and squeeze a narrow 3-2 victory, with a disputed penalty in the last minute.

Our third game against Liverpool, the eventual winners was a well balanced team effort as confidence grew and came away with a 2-2 draw. The younger players Emily Bowater, Katie Bowater, Emily Ireland and Eleanor Brear all worked tirelessly up and down the pool to support the attack and bolster the defence, with some fine saves from Emily Atkinson in goal.

With another short break before our final match Eleanor Brear went in goal, and did well. This was a much more open game, but ended with a pleasing 6-5 victory.

The whole tournament was played in a good friendly atmosphere as teams shared players if there were gaps in the squad, as we were missing a few players due to other comitments so we had Rosie Morris helpng out which made a big difference to our defence.

Well done to all those who took part and it was great for the team to get good experience and a few victories at the same time.

We hope to keep the squad together and play further friendly matches against teams in the region, so keep an eye on the calendar for upcoming matches and the odd training session.

Warrington Players take 2nd place at ESSA Cadet Water Polo Northern Final

Warrington Players take 2nd place at ESSA Cadet Water Polo Northern Final

Players from Warrington SWPC 14&U and 12&U squads returned to Manchester Aquatics Centre on Tuesday to compete in the ESSA Cadet Water Polo Northern Final.

Emily Ireland, Louis Stowell, Marcus Woods, Joseph Weston and Leo Kilpatrick formed the core of a team fielded by Great Sankey High School, and were returning to Manchester after winning the first round of the Northern Competition in May.

Great Sankey started well, with a 6-1 win against St Ambrose. Then drew a tight game against Bolton School 4-4. Next came another win for Sankey, this time against Park Road and a 8-2 result which placed us in the final up against Bolton School once more.

It was a tense and scrappy final with scores kept very close throughout but, despite some great performances from its players, Sankey just lost out to Bolton who won 6-5.

All our young players performed admirably and did their club, their school and their supporting parents proud.

Thank you to Mr Gee and the PE staff at Great Sankey for making this possible.

Womens Team - Northern League 25th June 2016

Warrington Women’s team put in good performance in the Northern League

The team played the three remaining games to complete this tournament. Performances have improved game on game. In the first game against Sheffield, whilst we lost 8-2, we played well in defence, and it was the attack that needed to improve.

The second game was against Leeds with the best performance of the whole tournament for our team, with excellent defensive work from Abby, Katie and Emily Bowater stealing the ball in front of goal, Tania making some excellent saves, and a much improved attack with Emma helping to spread the play and allow others to have room to score. Two goals from Emily Bowater, a great goal for one of our youngest players Emily Ireland who slotted in from close range and a further goal from Hazel Musgrove kept us in front with 90 seconds to go and with a 3-4 lead. However, with two exclusions Leeds converted from the man up to narrowly win by one goal 5-4.

The final game was against Liverpool, the eventual winners, and whilst we lost, everyone played well Tania made two excellent saves from close range. Eleanor Brear worked really hard tracking back to help in defence, Emily Ireland scored again, and Emily Atkinson, the latest recruit was rewarded with a fine goal. All round a great team performance. Final score 13-4

Warrington 12&U Win Silver Medals at M&D Mini Polo Tournament

Warrington 12&U Win Silver Medals at M&D Mini Polo Tournament

Warrington 12&U Team put in a brilliant performance at this year’s Manchester & District 12&U Mini Polo Tournament, hosted by Bridgefield WPC at the Austin Rawlinson Pool in Speke on 22nd May

With just 6 players, Warrington were outnumbered by every team there on the day, all of which had the full complement of 13 players. This meant that Warrington played all matches with no subs making the achievement even more impressive.

Match 1

We faced Tyldesley, traditionally a tough team and hard to beat. An early goal put Tyldesley in the lead, but Warrington evened up shortly after. A foul from Warrington Goalie Oliver led to a penalty for Tyldesley, but Oliver deftly saved it. We scored another before half time, taking it to 2-1 swapped halves and restarted, with an early goal from Warrington. Another goal from Warrington made it 3-1 then Tyldesley banged one in with just over 30 seconds left on the clock. Warrington had an attempt at a final goal but the whistle went and we ended with a 4-2 win.

Goals from Louis (2) and Marcus (2)

Match 2

This time we faced Liverpool, a relatively new Team and new to the M&D tournament. With only the minimum  number of players Warrington stuck with the formula adopted in our first match, playing on the break with Marcus and Louis storming the goal at every opportunity while Joe, Sam and Lilly protected Oliver in net. The strategy paid off as time and again Warrington’s defence closed down attacks from Liverpool, and fed the ball up to Marcus and Louis on the wings who played some great 1-2 action. Warrington dominated the first 4 minutes claiming 4 goals. Liverpool pulled one back then Warrington got another before half time for a 5-1 lead. Warrington continued the onslaught through the second half with goal after goal, and all Liverpool attempts being thwarted. Warrington added a further 5 goals in the second half, ending the match 10-1.

Goals from Louis (5) and Marcus (5)

Match 3

Warrington played Radcliffe in the semis. Radcliffe were another newly formed team and this was only their second competitive outing. They had improved significantly since Warrington played them a few weeks earlier. Warrington got an early goal in and followed with another shortly after. There was lots of midfield action as both teams battled to gain an advantage, and then Radcliffe grabbed one before half time.

Second half started with a gaol in the first minute from Warrington followed by another soon after for 4-1, then Radcliffe scored taking it to 4-2. Warrington scored another then Joe was accidently elbowed in the mouth, temporarily taking him out of the game – with no major damage he bravely carried on, but Radcliffe had upped their game taking it to 4-3 with just over 30 seconds left then taking another with just 14 seconds left on the clock. With Radcliffe coming back so strong in the last minute, Warrington were relieved when the full time buzzer went leaving them with a 5-4 win

Goals from Marcus (2) and Louis (3)

Match 4

For the Final, Warrington were up against Tournament favourites Bridgefield. From the outset it was clear that this would be a tougher match for Warrington. Bridgefield had several experienced players at the higher end of the age group, and they took the lead with a goal just after the first minute, followed by another a minute later. Louis was struggling to get past Bridgefield defenders and into a good position, and frustrations were clearly starting to show. Warrington battled on but were unable to secure any goals in the first half. Warrington went down to 5 players shortly after half time when Louis was briefly taken out of the game due to over frustration. Despite being a man down Warrington pulled it together, this time with an impressive goal from Sam making it  2-1. Louis re-joined the game for the restart and Warrington tried to pull even. A clash between Marcus and a Bridgefield player led to both being excluded with a minute and a half left. When they re-joined, Warrington tried to get up the pool for another attack but the lack of subs had meant it was a gruelling match for them, and tiredness and frustration took its toll. The game ended 2-1 to Bridgefield.

Goals from Sam (1)

Summary

Warrington played a fantastic tournament, and with only half a team, Warrington had worked twice as hard as the others. With our stronger more experienced players on the attack, and Oliver bringing his Goalkeeping experience to the rear, we had a successful formula which was bolstered by our less experienced players Lilly and Sam providing strong defence and Joe working hard in the middle ground,  both defending our goal and feeding our attackers. Warrington fought a brave final up against a strong Team with double the number of players – and it was to their credit that they were able to keep the final score so close.

With a small squad of eight players, Warrington played really well in their first outing this season. It was really good that some of the younger team members Eleanor and Emily were able to contribute to an excellent team performance and gain valuable experience.
In the first match Warrington played Sunderland, in a closely fought game with Hazel and Emma scoring to bring the score back level to 2-2, before Sunderland scored on a man up with one second to go in the first period to make it 2-3.
In the second period we lost another goal on man down before Hazel pulled one back to make it 3-4. In the last second a penalty gave Sunderland a 3-5 winning margin. Alison and Abby had shown their experience and defensive skills in this match.
The second game was against a much stronger physical side from Rotherham that went 4-0 up in the first period. Hazel pulled one back before three further goals gave a final score of 7-1.
In the final game Warrington were against a full squad from Sedgefield. Whilst they quickly went 4-0 up an excellent penalty from Emma and two goals from Hazel brought the score back to 5-3 early in the second half.
After two further goals from Sedgefield, Katie scored to round off an excellent performance and bring the score to 7-4. A final man down goal gave a final score of 8-4.
Whilst Tania was kept busy in goal all afternoon, her confidence and saves improved with each game.
Overall an enjoyable set of games to watch and excellent performance all round and great support from enthusiastic parents on the balcony- well done to everyone and looking forward to the next round of matches at the end of June

Warrington Players Success With Great Sankey High School

Warrington Swimming and Water Polo Club players success at ESSA Junior Championships

Players from Warrington SWPC who attend Great Sankey High School in years 7 & 8 have won the first round of the Northern heat of the English Schools Swimming Association (ESSA) Cadet Water Polo Championships.

Emily Ireland, Leo Kilpatrick, Louis Stowell, Joseph Weston and Marcus Woods along with two other pupils from Great Sankey joined school teams from across the North West at Manchester Aquatics Centre on Tuesday 17th May to compete for a place in the next round of the Northern Tournament.

After winning their first two group matches 6-0 and 5-0, Great Sankey went through to beat Beech House School in the semi-finals 12-0, securing their place in the final against St Edwards College Liverpool.

In the final Great Sankey were on the attack from the start, but their first attempt on goal went over the crossbar and St Edwards Keeper caught the 2nd and 3rd attempts. It was St Edwards who scored the first goal of the match but Great Sankey drew level shortly afterwards, and resumed their attack. Strong goalkeeping from St Edwards fended off several more shots, but Great Sankey pulled ahead with a second goal, then another soon after. A shot from St Edwards in the last minute went wide of the goal, and the match ended 3-1 to Great Sankey.

The Team go through to the next round of the Championship which is yet to be announced.

14&u M&D Warrington 23 - 3 Chester

M&D 14&u Warrington 23 - 3 Chester May 14th

Chester arrived at Great Sankey with 12 players to go up against an 8 strong Warrington Team.

Chester won the coin toss and opted to begin in the deep end.

Brett started us off with a goal in the first minute and then proceeded to make it a hat trick before two minutes had expired. He got another shortly after taking us to 4-0. Leo firmly deflected a couple of Chester attempts to score. Katie scored next for Warrington, then 30 seconds later Alfie got our sixth – Chester were still to score. Emily Atkinson picked up the first exclusion of the game for some overenthusiastic tackling, but then Joseph scored and Warrington ended the 1st quarter with a 7-0 lead.

Warrington continued to dominate with Emily Ireland picking up the first goal of the 2nd quarter, followed by one from Louis. Joseph scored his 2nd of the game taking it to 10-0 then Brett, in the pit and in a prime goal scoring position, showed great team spirit by tossing the ball to Louis who put it in the net. Brett scored the next, then Katie got her 2nd as we went into the last minute of the quarter. With just over 30 seconds left, Chester got their first goal of the match, and a cheer went up from their side, but Warrington managed to get another one in before the quarter ended with Katie scoring with just 1 second left on the clock.14-1 to Warrington.

3rd quarter started with a couple of Warrington exclusions. Louis was sent out for jumping of the bottom off the pool whilst defending, then shortly after Joseph was  sent out for blocking with both arms. Chester were unable to turn either of the man-up situations to their advantage however due to good goalkeeping from Leo, and it was Brett who scored the first goal of the quarter. Alfie netted two, then Brett one, then another from Alfie ended the quarter at 19-1.

Final quarter started with more exclusions. Emily Ireland and the Chester player she was marking were both sent out after a clash. No goals were scored by either side for the duration of the exclusions. Alfie scored the first goal of the quarter 3 minutes in. Emily Ireland picked up a second exclusion for a hard tackle but Chester didn’t gain any advantage. Brett made it 21-1, then Chester scored their second goal of the match. It was an eventful last minute and Warrington showed some great teamwork – Brett passed a long ball across the goal to Louis, who passed it back in to Emily Atkinson in the pit who scored for 22-2, then Brett made it 23-2. A foul by Louis within 5 metres of our goal resulted in a penalty for Chester who scored with just 3 seconds left on the clock, but at 23-3 Warrington had secured a great win.

In only their 2nd game of the season Warrington 14&u seemed to have made significant improvements since their previous match. Leo’s return as Goalkeeper after his shoulder injury has strengthened the team, and the older players demonstrated excellent leadership and guidance for the rest of the team.

Final Score: Warrington 23 – Chester 3

L&D Seniors v Port Sunlight 18-5

Warrington v Port Sunlight 18-5  4th May 2016

The senior side returned to winning ways with the return of Addison from his world tour.

Conor Lynch won the toss and elected to defend the deep end in the first quarter. Oli got the team off to a great start with three goals without reply. Port Sunlight scored on the man up and then Addison and then Oli made it 5-1 at the end of the quarter.

In the second quarter goals from Conor Lynch, Sam and Oli made it 8-1

In the third period Neil went in goal which gave Peter the opportunity to notch up two majors in quick succession. Ben then managed to score two fine goals and make it 10-1 going into the last period.

In the fourth Sam 2, Conor Dean 1, Conor Lynch1,  Addison 2 and Oli 2 scored, between many exclusions as we defended the shallow end. Neil saved a penalty in the shallow end, only for it to be allowed by the referee.

A good display all round and some great performances from the younger members of the team.
