Under 16s, L&D and Cheshire Cup, Liverpool Aquatics, 19th November

Warrington’s under-16s travelled to Liverpool Aquatics Centre on Saturday to compete in the L&D tournament and the Cheshire Cup.  They played two matches - against familiar opponents - Chester and Bridgefield.

The match against Chester was both the Cheshire Cup match and a tournament match.  In the first period of play Warrington dominated - Luke didn’t have to make any saves and goal-scorers were Conor, Dom, Ben and Emma.  Great defensive work from Emily, Emma, Conor and Dan.  The half-time score was 9 - 0.  The second half was much of the same, with goals from Dom, Dan, Brett, Emily, Katie and Conor.  Warrington were strong in attack with Ben, Brett and Alfie all hitting the post.  Chester battled to the end, scoring a goal and forcing Luke to make a save.  The match finished 17 - 1, putting the team in a strong position in the tournament and winners of the Cheshire Cup.

Goals - Conor 5, Dom 4, Ben 2, Katie 2, Emma 1, Brett 1, Dan, 1 Emily B 1

The second match was against rivals Bridgefield, and as the last match of the afternoon, the ref was keen to get the match going.  Ben put in a great shift defending the Bridgefield centre-forward.  Warrington goal-scorers were Emily, Dom and Dan; Luke had to make a couple of saves.  This was a close match and the half-time score was 3 - 2.  The second half was again very close, and Warrington missed a couple of opportunities.  Dom scored two goals and Bridgefield score a penalty.  Again Ben defended the pit against a strong attacking Bridgefield team.  The final score was 5 - 3, and Warrington took the L&D title.

Goals - Emily B 1, Dom 3, Dan 1

Squad - Emma, Luke, Alfie, Ben, Conor, Brett, Emily I, Katie, Emily B, Dan

Presentation Evening Celebrates Success

Presentation Evening Celebrates Team Success

The Warrington Swimming and Water Polo Club held its annual presentation evening on November 19th at Padgate Community Centre. Over 70 trophies were handed out to winners of the Swimming Club championships with ten new record times.

The swim team also celebrated winning the Merseyside and District Division 3 swimming championships and promotion to the Division 2 league. Below are some of the swimmer of the year award winners

On the water polo side the senior men’s team had that afternoon won the Liverpool and District Grade1 tournament, and at the same event our 16u side won the Liverpool and District and Cheshire County trophies. This team had already won the Bolton and District league and Knockout competitions, being undefeated all season so each of the players were able to collect four medals each. They are currently top of the Manchester and District league, with one game to play, so with a team that only has two players at the top of its age group, next season looks like team will have every chance to dominate all these competitions next year as well.

The previous week the 14u side had also won the Cheshire County trophy. Whilst it is great to see so much success we are looking for children in the 10-12 and 13-14-year age ranges who would like to try this great team game and join our water polo squads so we can build on these achievements.

Senior Team Liverpool & District Grade 1 Tournament Winners November19th

The senior team finished second in the Liverpool & District league, the highest position for many years to qualify for the end of season Grade 1 tournament. The first game was a tense and close encounter, with Warrington just edging a 5-4 victory against Chester. In the second game, the team lost focus, after a number of decisions did not go their way, losing

7-0 to Bridgefield. In the last game, the team played much better and won a comfortable victory 8-4 against Liverpool.

Bizarrely in the other games, each team ended up winning one game, losing one game and drawing one game, which meant Warrington were declared winners of the tournament with two straight victories with the other places determined by goal difference,

Warrington vs. Stretford (16 & Under)

1st Quarter

Matt wins the swim off, but the attack runs out of time, and the visitors start positively forcing Luke to make a save.  The Warrington defence are slow and Stretford capitalise, taking the lead.  Matt makes sure this isn’t repeated and defends the next attack.  Conor makes a great swim up, but doesn’t score.  Dom goes on to make the score level,  Warrington defend well, as the visitors attack.  Warrington on the attack and the clock is running down - Katie shoots, but no goal.  Another attack, and Dan sends the ball to Dom in the pit, he’s closely marked and the ball doesn’t quite reach the goal-line.  Stretford start their attack, Emma defends well.  In the next attack, Dom tries a bounce-shot, but it hits the post.  The home-side gain a penalty, Dom takes it and scores.  Stretford counter-attack and Matt defends - Luke makes a save, and sends the ball long up to Dan, who buries it in the back of the net.  Stretford attack, but Dan intercepts and swims-up.  Possession changes again and Stretford attack.  Conor defends well and makes a long-pass to Matt, who shoots but hits the post. Stretford gain a man-up, but the ball is sent over the bar.  The quarter ends 3 - 1.

2nd Quarter

Warrington defend the shallow-end and are soon on the attack.  Dan shoots, but it is saved.  Stretford attack and shoot, but it hits the post.  Dan and Dom exchange passes and it’s Dan who scores the first goal of the quarter.  Stretford hit the post, but Warrington quickly counter and this time, Conor scores with a bounce-shot.  Again Stretford hit the post, and Luke collects the ball, he passes up to Conor who scores with another bounce-shot.  Dan passes to Eleanor, who passes to Conor.  Warrington get a man-up, but it amounts to nothing.  Stretford are quickly on the attack and Luke is forced to make a diving save, they attack again, but this time the ball goes over.  Conor scores a hat-trick with yet another bounce-shot.  Stretford attack, and the Ref decides on a drop-ball, Dan wins it and passes to Luke who sends the ball to Dom, he scores (hat-trick).  This time, Luke passes to Conor who scores another bounce-shot.  Emma and Matt both defend well as the visitors attack, Matt passes to Emma who swims up the wing, passing the ball to Dan.  Stretford score, quickly followed by another Warrington goal - this time it’s Dan who gets a hat-trick.  Stretford attack, and Dom intercepts the ball - Tom calls time-out.  Conor scores.  Luke has the last throw of the quarter and the ball goes over.  The quarter ends 11 - 2.

3rd Quarter

Matt wins the swim-off, and Emily takes the ball in, she takes a shot but it goes just wide.  Dom wins the ball and swims up in attack, but Stretford defend well and are soon on the attack.  The home-side are terrific in defence as the visitors take a couple of shots.  On the attack again and Dom shoots but it is saved.  Conor passes to Katie, she passes to Matt.  Matt shoots, but it’s saved.  Good work from the home-side.  Katie is back in defence, and Luke makes a save.  Luke passes to Conor, who passes to Katie - this time she scores a well deserved goal - she is working hard (and has just played in the under-14s match).  Emma defends and Luke makes a save.  He passes to Katie who shoots again, this time it it saved.  Stretford gain a man-up, but the hosts defend well.  Katie passes to Matt, who is on the score-sheet.  Emma’s turn to shoot, but the Stretford keeper saves it.  Dom passes into Dan, who shoots and scores.  Emma defends the Stretford attack, they shoot but it hits the post.  Dan taps the ball thinking it goes into the net, but no goal.  The quarter ends 14 - 3.

4th Quarter

The visitors win the swim off and attack.  Luke claims the ball and sends it into Dom who scores.  Stretford gain a free-throw and score.  Matt scores, despite the best efforts of the Stretford keeper who got a hand to it.  Luke passes the ball up to Katie, who shoots, but it goes wide.  Stretford are straight into another attack and score.  Conor gains possession and keeps the ball as he swims up under pressure.  Dom swims up, receives the ball and scores.  Katie again defends well.  The ball is sent out of play by Stretford; Dan passes to Luke, who passes up to Conor who scores again - his second hat-trick.  Dom also scores, getting his second hat-trick.  The match comes to an end with another goal from Dom.  The final score is 20 - 5.

14&U L&D Tournament F.D. Nevin Trophy and Cheshire Alf Harland Trophy

14&U L&D Tournament and Cheshire Alf Harland Trophy Game 13th November Europa Pools, Birkenhead.

Warrington travelled to Birkenhead for the annual L&D Tournament. Southport had pulled out this year leaving just Warrington, Bridgefield, Liverpool and Chester to participate.

Teams played 2 x 7 minute halves with a stopping clock.

Chester, Liverpool and Bridgefield had a good player turnout with most fielding a full, or close to full, team – Warrington in contrast had 8 down to play but only 7 on the day, Alf Shelley had to pull out after sustaining a football injury on the day. Warrington would be playing with the minimum number of players with no subs or rest opportunities and would be outnumbered by every team they come up against.

The first game saw Liverpool lose out 6-3 to Chester. Chester stayed in to play Bridgefield next, who put in a powerful performance winning the match 17-0 and setting an impressive standard to beat.

3rd Match saw Warrington take to the water for the first time against Liverpool. Warrington dominated from the beginning with some excellent play with most of the action kept in Liverpool’s half of the pool. Emily in Warringtons goal had a mostly uneventful match whilst the rest of the team blocked, tackled, passed, drove and scored to a 18-0 win!

Warrington stayed in the pool, this time to play against Chester. The result of this game was also being used to determine the winner of the Cheshire Alf Harland Trophy, so lots to play for. Warrington anticipated a tougher match this time, we started with an early goal after winning the swim off, but then Chester came straight back with a couple of goals  from some fast drives into Warrington’s goal area. Warrington switched up their positions and took control of the rest of the game, Chester bagged another goal but Warrington prevailed finishing the match 16-3. One trophy secured, Warrington were in good spirits.

Warrington got to sit the next match out whilst Liverpool played Bridgefield. Bridgefield put in another strong performance winning 13-0 this time.

Last game of the day was between Warrington and Bridgefield for 1st and 2ndplaces. Warrington, expecting a fierce game from Bridgefield, focussed on defense and playing on the break. It was a scrappy game with plenty of scrimmages – Brett, seemingly under pressure from two to three Bridgefield players constantly, pushed hard to find routes through, Louis was rolling around with his opponent on the left wing like a couple of fighting alligators and Katie took an elbow to the nose but heroically shook it off and carried on.  Kelsey playing centre-forward had some strong drives on goal and we had a series of very close shots on goal that missed by a very narrow margin. Annie, playing in centrefield, kept pressure on any players entering her area and had some good drives up the pitch, whilst Emily I played some great defence, putting in firm, but legal, tackles. Emily A, under more pressure now, worked hard to protect our goal but with Bridgefield shooting at almost point blank range even when she blocked the shot Bridgefield managed to pick up some goals on the rebound.  Warrington played hard and played well but it was Bridgefield who took the 1st place finishing the game 10-3.

Outnumbered but definitely not outclassed Warrington finished the tournament in 2nd place with a Cheshire Trophy to boot – in addition Brett was awarded Top Goalscorer of the tournament. The whole team played brilliantly and their superb performance with so few players was praised by organisers and officials.

14&u M&D Radcliffe 9 - 29 Warrington

Sunday 23rd Oct M&D 14&U Radcliffe 9 – Warrington 29

Warrington travelled to Radcliffe on Sunday with just enough for a team – Leo and Joe W. were unavailable and Emily I. was still recovering from injury – Annie and Louis steeped up from 12&U team to support.

Warrington won the toss and elected to start in the deep end. Brett scored first just 16 seconds in with Louis getting the second shortly after. Radcliffe had a player excluded and Warrington took advantage with another from Louis taking us to 3-0. Radcliffe got their first point on the scoreboard then had another player excluded giving Warrington another opportunity which Alfie took advantage of to make it 4-1. Warrington were demonstrating some great passing. Brett picked up an exclusion and Radcliffe scored. Then Alfie put one in making it 5-2. Radcliffe had another exclusion during which Louis scored. Emily was on great form in our goal. Brett put another away then Radcliffe had two players out on a double exclusion. Warrington set up the arc to good effect passing around and louis scored from the post. Annie picked up her first exclusion for swimming over, but we ended the quarter with a goal from Brett. 9-2 to Warrington.

Second quarter started with a Radcliffe exclusion and a goal from Brett, then another soon after. Radcliffe scored, then Alfie made it 12-3. Katie decided it was time she made her mark and got the next two goals. Annie was working hard pressuring Radcliffe attempts on goal and they had another player excluded. Warrington were attacking well, Eleanor on the right wing was feeding the ball up and Katie bagged another two goals but then had a penalty against her which Radcliffe converted. It was 16-4. Annie picked up an exclusion and Radcliffe scored, then had one of theirs excluded and Katie scored her 5th . Louis was excluded briefly as Brett scored a second later then again. Eleanor was sent out but Brett scored again and we finished the quarter 20-5.

Third quarter saw Brett open with two goals before 30 seconds had elapsed. Radcliffe had an exclusion and Katie scored then Radcliffe got one. Alfie got his first exclusion but it was Annie put paid to any advantage Radcliffe might have gained by scoring her first and taking the score to 24-6. Emily was absolutely on fire in goal! Radcliffe pulled one back but then had two players excluded giving us a double man-up which we used well with Alfie scoring. Radcliffe scored one then Alfie got a final goal in this quarter ending 26-8.

Due to time constraints we agreed a running clock in the final quarter and Warrington decided to switch players around so they could get some experience playing  different positions. Louis, trying out the centre-back position, seemed to forget, swam up and scored, then Eleanor, who had moved into an attacking role, had some good attempts on goal. The first one hit the bar, then she got a slow ball past the goalie which hit the water and started a slow roll in – we all held our breathe but the momentum was not enough to take it over the goal line. The next one from Eleanor found its mark and a cheer went up from Warrington as she scored for 28-8. The change of positions had thrown off Radcliffe’s strategy and they no longer knew who they should be marking. Annie picked up another exclusion for reasons which remain a mystery and was wrapped up, but the game was almost over. Alfie scored one then Brett got his second exclusion and Radcliffe got a final goal and a cheer went up from their side. Final score was 29-9 to Warrington.

A great result considering we only had the minimum number of players, but Warrington had demonstrated some fantastic teamwork throughout and the two referees and Radcliffe coaches come forward to praise and congratulate them.

1st Half

Warrington got off to a good start, with Annie getting in a shot at goal in the first few seconds.

The teams were quite evenly balanced as they tried to build momentum. Radcliffe countered and scored in the 59th second (0:1)

Annie shot again, but it was parried by the goalie.  Louis struck, but the goal was disallowed, but ten scored a few seconds later (1:1)

Radcliffe scored again within the next minute (1:2).

Louis shot again, but goalie scrabbled the ball against the cross bar.

Marcus delivered a fine shot, levelling the scores (2:2)

Radcliffe came back with another goal less than a minute later (2:3)

Warrington went on the counter, but were too slow to get back after the Radcliffe goalie launched a long throw resulting in another away goal (2:4)

Warrington responded quickly with 2 quick goals from Louis and Marcus (4:4)

Sadly Radcliffe managed to edge back into the lead with 30 seconds to go and Annie finished the half in the way she started, with a great shot in the last second.

2nd Half

The second half showed much promise, with goals from Annie and Marcus in the first minute taking Warrington into the lead for the first time in the match (6:5)

Radcliffe responded with another goal (6:6) then took the lead 2 minutes later (6:7).

They pulled further ahead with another 2 goals (6:9) leaving less than 3 minute to go.

Warrington never gave up and kept their composure and Louis scored another goal (7:9) with 37 seconds left on the clock.

Radcliffe somehow managed to score yet again (7:10) with 5 seconds left.

Unbelievably, Marcus scored an absolutely stunning goal from the restart in the last second of the game!!

Overall, a good performance from the team, showing great promise for the future.

Under-16s face Stretford

Stretford vs. Warrington 16 & U

1st Quarter

The Sunday night encounter at Stretford starts well for the visitors, attacking the shallow end.  Warrington defend as a team as the hosts set up well, and are soon on the attack.  Attack and defence are well-matched as a tussle involving Dan ends in a drop-ball decision.  Stretford on the attack and the visitors are defending again.  Matt defends well and Stretford gain a man-up.  Dan and Conor exchange passes as they move up the pool to attack, but Stretford gain possession and get a man-up, resulting in a goal.  The visiting team try to keep their disappointment at bay, but the ref is firm and Stretford start the play with a man-up.  The hosts look to capitalise on their advantage and mark tightly as the Warrington attack runs out of time.  Back to a full team and Warrington win the ball again - Emily passes to Conor, Ben goes on to score a great goal, following a rebound from Conor.  With the scores level, Warrington’s confidence returns and Dan scores following good play from the whole team.  Stretford gain a man-up, but nothing comes of it.  Warrington gain a man-up and Conor hits the cross-bar, Katie defends well.  Stretford level the score again.  Warrington get a man-up, Matt shoots but it’s saved.  Warrington defend and Luke makes a save.  It’s been a tense quarter, ending with the score at 2-2.

3rd Quarter

The home side are slow to get into position so the ref gives the ball to Warrington, and the team swim up for their attack.  Stretford gain possession again, and Ben defends the pit.  Now on the attack, Ben shoots, but hits the post.  Stretford shoot but the ball goes over.    Warrington get a man-up and Matt shoots, but it’s saved.  Emily shoots - her trade-mark lob-shot - and scores.  Emma defends well and Luke makes a save.  Brett scores with a cracking goal.  Brett passes to Conor, who puts it away increasing the lead.  Warrington attack again Brett passes to Conor, then he passes to Ben who shoots and scores.  Luke makes another save.  Emily makes a terrific swim-up.  The Stretford keeper comes right out of the net and the visitors have a penalty.  Matt takes it, and scores.  Brett intercepts and interrupts a Stretford attack.  They gain possession again and the visitors have to defend.  Brett takes the ball up the pool, he shoots and it hits the post.  Matt defends the wing, the hosts set-up - they try a bounce-shot, but it doesn’t go in.  Emily is under pressure as the hosts defend and the attack runs out of time.  Stretford attack now and Brett intercepts a pass.  Luke passes to Conor, he passes to Ben who scores his hat-trick.  The quarter ends 3-13.

4th Quarter

Warrington win the swim-off again and Emma is under pressure and can’t get the ball to Ben in the pit.  The hosts are on the attack and score.  The visitors next attack results in Brett taking a shot, but he hits the post.  Luke makes a terrific save.  Brett swims up and passes to Dom, who takes a shot and scores, he’s on a hat-trick.  Dan defends the pit as Luke scoops up the ball.  Dan passes to Brett, but he is tightly marked and squeezed off the ball.  The team all defend as one.  Stretford score.  Good passing from Warrington, the ball is with Dom, in the pit - he doesn’t get a shot and the ball is sent out to Brett, who swims in to score.  Great play from the visitors.  Luke passes to Dom, he passes to Emily and she then passes to Brett.  He shoots, but no goal.  The Warrington attack continues and Katie is fouled, the visitors have a man-up.  Katie shoots and is fouled again - she shoots but no goal.  And no hat.  Dan passes to Emily, she shoots and the keeper stops it, but doesn’t collect the ball.  Emily scoops up the ball, she passes to Katie who gets her goal.  Ref checks her number as she puts the hat back on.  Stretford are on the attack and Emily defends.  Into the last minute, and Dom scores.  Good swim-up from Dom who passes to Conor - he shoots and scores a terrific lob-shot into the bottom right corner.  Conor gets his hat-trick.  Dom intercepts a Stretford pass, sends the ball to Ben who takes the last shot of the match, but no goal.  The match ends 5-18.

Warrington came across strong opposition in this epic match.  Tension showed, so the coaches had to keep the team focussed, and as a result they gave a strong performance.

12&u B&D Knockout Semi Final Bridgefield 11 - 4 Warrington

The semi-final of the B&D mini polo cup between Bridgefieldand Warrington was held on October 6th at the Austin Rawlinson leisure centre. A team of 7 from Warrington headed over to Speke to take on local rivals Bridgefield.

Unfortunately Warrington were slow to get going and before long were trailing 1-0. In reply James Boyce managed to get off a shot which was well saved by Bridgefield’s impressive goalkeeper. Sadly this was to be the story of the night. Soon after Bridgefield were 2-0 up as their accurate shooting paid off. It wasn’t all one way as Marcus Woods tested the keeper with a great shot, but again it was well saved.

Bridgewater maintained their domination, quickly racking up 2 goals, one a penalty for a dubious infringement by the goalie Joe Daley. But Warrington weren’t disheartened as first Louis Stowell with powerful shot from out wide and then Annie Sholl with another long shot, were both repelled by the Bridgefield goalie. Would they ever get passed him?

Despite dogged efforts from Warrington, they were often left exposed at the bag as Bridgefield stole forward scoring 4goals in quick succession taking the score to 8 without reply. Even under such pressure keeper Joe pulled off some fine saves, one in particular where he somehow managed to reach one goal bound effort deserves special praise. But it wasn’t all one way, with Marcus and Evie Sandell testing the keeper

Warrington started the second half with renewed optimism applying pressure on Bridgefield, now defending the deep end. Again Marcus and Annie were to the fore, with Annie hitting the post twice when she really should have scored and Marcus bringing another fine save from The Wall

As Warrington surged forward trying to get a goal on the board, they were again left exposed at the back and conceded their 9th goal. However new goalie James wasn’t to be deterred, pulling off a series of fine saves in an attempt to stop the onslaught.

But miracles can happen and as Warrington started to build some solidity at the back notably led by Evie in the centre of defence, their forwards were able to take advantage with first Louis scoring and then Marcus shooting narrowly wide. Had the tide turned? Unfortunately not for long, as poor timing of a substitution by the Warrington coach, left James without any defence and an easy goal for Bridgefield! 10-1.

At this point one might have thought that Warrington should have got out and gone home, but the team showed true strength and determination, and as Bridgefield tired, the blue caps of Warrington brought some respectability to the score. First Louis doubled his account and then it was 10-3 as Joe gave a great pass to Marcus to open his account.  Not long after we had the move of the night as Lily Ireland moved swiftly to intercept the ball in defence before setting Marcus off to swim half the length of the pool and score in fine style.

10-4, would Warrington mount a fight back? Well in keeping with the rest of the match, our hopes were dashed again. This time James was penalised having made a great save, for taking the ball under the water. The pen was dispatched giving Bridgefield a 11-4 lead going into the last minute. The clock quickly ran down with only Marcus able to fire off an attempt which sailed just over the bar.

So ultimately disappointment for the U12s, as Bridgefield and their keeper in particular proved too strong for the Warrington juniors. Still there were positive signs with the side gelling in the second half as they worked on their defence and despite trailing 8-0 at the interval, came back taking the second period 4-3! Well done to everyone who involved.
